Design Story: BADASS BUNNIES

Badass Bunnies artwork - Courage My Love Clothing

Method: Spray paint and stencils

Artist: Flox

Artist Quote

This rabbit themed design pay homage to the quintessential rhyme from our childhood, “Run Rabbit”. Drawing from the poem's darker roots, the artwork makes reference to the rabbit's destructive nature, with populations throughout Aotearoa, again reaching catastrophic proportions. The tongue and cheek nature of the artwork, will inspire a sense of “bounce” for the wearer, contrasting with the moodier undertones which in turn, evoke a bit of a “don’t mess with me” attitude.

From the Heart

Persephone Singfield, Heart Director of Courage My Love says this about Badass Bunnies: I was visiting a street art exhibition when I saw a large installation by Flox. I was really taken by the fauna and flora in her street art. Such delicate beauty in this medium. I remember my first meeting with Flox in her studio. I had brought with me a bunch of artworks and Legskin Tights and was showing her how an oil painting came to exist as a print on clothing. Lots of people can’t appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating something that is not just a repeating pattern, but actually designed specifically to sit on the clothing the way that it does. Flox was fascinated by our attention to detail and wanted to get started right away. Originally we had discussed the Badass Bunnies design to be monochrome, black and white. When the artwork was finished we ran the first tests and decided against it. The vibe of the artwork and the message it carried had a darker feel. I started to feel that this design could be our brands ‘black’ tights design. As most of our designs are busy and brightly coloured, it felt good to offer something black to the people who love our brand but don’t love wearing colour. As her story emerged about her inspiration behind her creation it felt like Badass Bunnies was destined to be black. The samples came through looking great, so into production we went.
